Fernanda Abarca was born in Goiania, Brazil and is currently an artist at DreamWorks Animation in Glendale, CA, and a freelance cake artist. She spent most of her childhood drawing Disney characters for fun. At 19, Fernanda was awarded the Maryland Distinguished Scholar in the Visual Arts and was awarded a full scholarship to the Maryland Institute College of Art – to study Illustration.
After learning alongside some of the best contemporary painters, in 2002, Fernanda was accepted into the prestigious Ringling College of Art & Design, Sarasota FL, where she studied 3D Animation. In 2006, Fernanda was offered a character Animation Position at DreamWorks Animation, Glendale, CA.
She currently resides in California with her husband and two children and continues to work at DreamWorks Animation as a surfacing artist. Her work has been featured in consumer products for “How to Train Your Dragon 2,” and in films such as “The Croods,” “Kung Fu Panda,” “Madagascar: Escape to Africa,” “Shrek the Halls,” “Megamind,” “Kung Fu Panda 2” , “How to Train your Dragon” and “Trolls”.
In January 2013, she started Fernanda Abarca Cakes – an online sugar arts company specializing in bringing characters to life in sugar form for entertainment companies. The company has grown to be one of Facebook’s favorite cake decorating pages, and the studio’s go-to for cakes/cupcakes. Fernanda is a SatinIce Artist of Excellence. She was awarded “International Cake Decorator of the Year 2013, by CAKE Magazine, & “Top 10 Sugar Artist in North America 2015” by Dessert Professional magazine. Her work has been featured in magazines, books, blogs and her extremely popular sugar sculpting tutorials have sold thousands of copies to fans all over the world.
